Crowley's other works

Swalwell sits where the River Derwent meets the Tyne, and from the 1690s it formed the second, larger site of Sir Ambrose Crowley's ironworks, alongside his original works at neighbouring Winlaton. Together the two sites made Crowley's operation probably the largest integrated ironworking business in Europe at its height, turning out anchors, chains and tools for the Royal Navy under the same progressive (if, by Crowley's own later trade in slave-trade ironware, morally complicated) management described on this site's Winlaton page.
