Throckley

On the line of the Wall

Throckley grew as a mining and quarrying village on Newcastle's far western edge, close enough to the route of Hadrian's Wall that sections of ditch and rampart survive nearby, part of the same World Heritage frontier covered on this site's Wallsend and Benwell pages. Coal and whinstone quarrying shaped the village through the 19th and 20th centuries; today it's a residential village bordering open country to the west of the city.
