Fawdon
A former colliery village absorbed into Newcastle's northern suburbs.
From colliery to suburb
Fawdon Colliery once anchored this small settlement north of Newcastle city centre, part of the same coalfield that ran under much of Tyneside. As mining wound down through the 20th century, Fawdon was built up into a residential suburb, its industrial origins now visible mainly in the pattern of older streets rather than any working colliery remains.
