Concord is one of the numbered residential "Districts" laid out as part of Washington's designation as a post-war New Town in 1964, a planning story told in full on this site's Washington page. Like its neighbouring districts, it was built around a self-contained pattern of housing, local shops and green space, distinct from the older villages the New Town absorbed.
