Castletown

A Wearside village shaped by limestone as much as coal.

Quarries on the Wear

Castletown sits on the Wear's north bank, its history tied to limestone quarrying as much as the coal and shipbuilding that shaped so much of the rest of Sunderland. The magnesian limestone that runs along this coast, the same stone quarried here for generations, underlies much of Wearside's older stone building.
