Hall and colliery

Backworth's history combines two threads common across North Tyneside: an old estate, centred on Backworth Hall, and a colliery that grew up alongside it through the 19th century. The mining village that resulted has since become a quieter residential settlement, within easy reach of both Newcastle and the coast.
